1) Create a Routine Inspection Process

  • Taking a step back and looking at your equipment and its base daily and weekly, checking for cracks, fractures, or crumbling concrete; signs of grout deterioration; rust or corrosion on mounting hardware; and uneven surfaces or shifting components.
  • Physically touching and examining the base and scheduling regular, in-depth maintenance inspections.
  • Conducting non-destructive testing and periodic evaluations by reliability or engineering teams.

Consistency is key. Even basic observations can reveal early warning signs. Documenting observations, conditions, measurements, and all maintenance and repairs performed is critical and will help build a bigger picture of performance and reliability.

2) Focus on Critical Components

During these inspections, pay close attention to:

  • Pads and Footings – Ensure they are level and supporting the load evenly. Any settling or erosion can impact equipment stability.
  • Anchor Bolts and Baseplates – Check for looseness, corrosion, or misalignment. These connections are critical to maintaining structural integrity.
  • Mounting Surfaces – Inspect for distortion, wear, or uneven contact that could introduce stress into the system.

3) Go Beyond the Surface

Visual inspections alone may not detect underlying issues. When needed, more advanced techniques can provide a clearer picture.

  • Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) – Methods such as ultrasound or magnetic testing can identify internal defects without damaging the structure.
  • Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) – Useful for detecting voids, subsurface cracks, or water intrusion beneath the foundation.
  • Soil and Structural Testing – Helps evaluate load-bearing capacity and long-term stability.

These approaches are especially valuable for critical or aging infrastructure.

4) Don’t Overlook Alignment and Installation

Proper installation plays a major role in preventing future issues.

  • Ensure equipment is mounted on a stable, properly grouted base.
  • Verify alignment before and after startup.
  • Correct soft foot conditions prior to operation.
  • Avoid over-tightening or improper adjustments.

Many long-term problems begin during installation.

5) Document and Track Changes Over Time

Inspection findings should be documented clearly and consistently.

Tracking changes over time allows teams to:

  • Identify trends.
  • Plan maintenance more effectively.
  • Prevent recurring issues.
